This is an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer, wanting to develop their automated machinery design skills and looking for a challenging role within a fast-paced project environment. This position is based in Southampton, Hampshire with some occasional visits to customer sites throughout the UK.
Working in a project orientated environment, you’ll report to the Head of Mechanical Engineering and be involved in all aspects of mechanical engineering, throughout the whole project cycle from concept through to installation. You will ensure that concept designs are converted to successful automation solutions on time and to budget.
Key Responsibilities include:
• Mechanical concepting of robotic automation equipment and fixturing using 3D modelling
• Detailed design
• Design verification and calculations
• Project responsibilities, include customer liaison, design review meetings, costing, specification of bought-in parts, BOM production for purchasing, management of sub-suppliers, commissioning, dimensional set-up and buy-off
• Risk assessment, CE marking and documentation responsibilities
• Providing technical guidance and support to the System Build and Controls teams
Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Proven experience of mechanical concepting/design is essential, and experience in the design of automation equipment is advantageous. You must be able to come up with innovative but practical design ideas to solve engineering problems whilst at the same time meeting customer requirements, change requests and budget constraints. Knowledge of robot jig and fixture design, welding or handling applications would also be advantageous.
A Mechanical Engineering degree is essential along with proven 3D CAD experience, preferably with AutoCAD Inventor.
You must be conversant with British technical and legislative standards, can produce design calculations and have an in depth understanding of geometric tolerances. You will be familiar with sheet metal manufacturing, machining and other metal manufacturing techniques, including welded fabrications and mechanical assembly method.
You will also be self-motivated and possess excellent communication skills along with the ability to work within a multi-disciplined team. A good appreciation of electrical control systems would also be a distinct advantage.
